Genesis: Robotics
First things first: What IS the Genesis™ blueprint and why should I care?
Sundberg-Ferar’s Genesis: Robotics innovation blueprint is our proprietary set of techniques used to identify trends, discover unmet needs, synthesize conclusions, and realize innovation pathways that lead to tangible solutions. Our Genesis process is the best way clients can dive into future opportunities to establish ideal consumer experiences, confidently develop solutions, and assess high opportunity innovation pathways to set up future tactical plans.
Sundberg-Ferar’s Innovation Strategy techniques ensure that your organization is prepared and tactically poised to create and develop solutions for yourself or your stakeholders. Your resources are too valuable to be spent solving the wrong problems and developing solutions people don’t need. Our Genesis™ strategy experts consider external and internal variables that may impact your organization to uncover unmet needs and define tactical initiatives to fulfill your future objectives.

gen·e·sis /ˈjenəsəs/ noun
1. the origin or mode of formation of something.
Creating truly valuable solutions is about understanding users’ ideals and delivering completely new experiences that grow brand loyalty and increase market value.
This type of innovation requires insights that begin at the genesis of the users’ needs. This is what human-centered design is all about. Our Genesis™ team gets to the root of the opportunity to properly grow solutions on a fruitful foundation.

DESiN LLC: Obi Feeding Robot
A great example of innovative robotic design is DESiN, LLC’s robotic feeding device, Obi, which we helped design. DESiN saw that there was a need in the market for a device that would allow disabled users to feed themselves when a caregiver didn’t have the time to sit with them for 30 minutes. But in our work with DESiN, what created a truly life changing product experience was understanding that the biggest impact was restoring some of the user’s personal dignity with a product that helped them perform a basic human need. Designing for this emotional attribute, our team was able to create training functions in the robot so that a caregiver could establish a learned spoon placement for the robot with just two touches. We also developed smart resting behaviors for the robot, simple movements to communicate in a human way like a bow, or shaking its head, and other intuitively “human” actions like scraping the back of the spoon before feeding the user wet foods like soup. These smart experiences improved user satisfaction and transformed the potentially cold and intrusive robotic arm device into a welcomed helper. Read more.
Hyundai, New Horizons Studio: TIGER
After working with Hyundai to develop ELEVATE – a “walking” Ultimate Mobility Vehicle – we again teamed up with NHS to create an unmanned compact modular vehicle that could reach the most extreme locations on earth… and beyond. Through the process of developing ELEVATE, NHS and Sundberg-Ferar saw opportunities for a compact yet agile cargo transport and surveillance robot. The team needed to design this new vehicle from the ground up, utilize new 3D techniques to engineer a functional working prototype, and visualize the potential capabilities with high-end video animations.
