Setting a New Standard for the Medical Industry
Stryker
Stryker asked Sundberg-Ferar to help them set a new standard for the high acuity hospital bed market while achieving the following major challenges.
- Tastefully integrate new state of the art technology upgrades
- Incorporate newly recognized best practices
- Improve craftsmanship, industrial design, and fit and finish
- Meet regulatory and ecological compliances
Stryker aspired to set their brand apart by creating a new standard for the appearance, fit, and finish of the high acuity hospital bed market.
The team began by establishing three primary objectives to tackle this challenge. First, to reconcile the hospital staff’s need for efficiency with the patient’s need for emotional and physical comfort. Second, to tastefully apply state of the art technology, and third, to integrate current and emerging hospital style trends. Starting with a divergent approach, we identified a broad spectrum of concept opportunities and then began to evolve into a more refined focus for development of engineered solutions for the new InTouch Critical Care Bed. The team built physical mockups early and often to explore and validate improved ergonomics and evaluate proportion and scale. We also supported the graphical user interface development to translate Stryker’s advanced technologies into an intuitive and seamlessly integrated experience for the user.

As an ICU physician, being provided state of the art equipment allows me to do this at the highest level possible. The inTouch critical care bed has brought state of the art capabilities and an element of quality and design that had yet to be seen.”
