After a project with DESiN LLC to bring a robot to life that would help users with limited mobility feed themselves independently, the robot has seen remarkable adoption and has even been awarded for its exceptional design, with testimonial after testimonial coming in of its life-changing benefit to users.

How was this achieved? Beginning with design research guided the team in creating a human-machine interface that would not only aid users at a functional level, but bring delight and dignity back to their dining experience. With DESiN’s advanced prototype and human-centered ethos as a starting point, Sundberg-Ferar embarked on enhancing the product through engineering and design development, considering not only for the end-user, but also caretakers who would need to clean the robot, fill it with food, and properly position it for dining. This included refining a spoon shape and robot movement that would easily deliver food to the user’s mouth without spills. Our observational research and testing also revealed that users started to form an attachment with the robot and Sundberg-Ferar refined the robot’s form and behavior to build on this connection. Ultimately, DESiN and Sundberg-Ferar created a simple and effective user interface that lead to Obi’s success as a friendly servant that enables users to meaningfully engage with their communities through the profound human experience of food.
