Sundberg-Ferar worked with 3M Health Care (now Terumo Cardiovascular Systems) as part of a large multi-partner team in the development of their System 1 heart-lung machine.
As an integral team member of the client’s internal project management team from the start of the project, S-F led the primary field research with hospitals and surgical teams to define and categorize the fundamental design criteria for this equipment. This, in turn, led to the basic product strategy formation, the conceptual product design and feasibility development, as well as the direct design support for all of the system hardware. The customizable touch screen interface control of the system, its appearance, and navigation was also a primary responsibility of S-F design staff throughout this program.
In its final form, the System 1 provides an incredibly flexible and powerful system of modular components to meet the constantly changing needs of hospitals and staffs, procedure complexities, and the developing technologies on both the hardware and software aspects of the overall system.
