Core 77 Interviews Sundberg-Ferar on 2024 Design Trends

Core 77 Interviews Sundberg-Feraer on 2024 Design Trends

Sundberg-Ferar Director of Innovation Strategy, David Byron, was featured in a thought-provoking interview on design trends at CES 2024 with Core77, global authority and media publication on design. In the interview, conducted by Covestro’s John Skabardonis, Byron delved into the intricate relationship between product design and functionality, particularly within the realms of home medical care, diagnosis, and self-assessment technologies.

In this onsite interview at Las Vegas’ Venetian Expo, David emphasized the change in thinking occurring in the health-tech industry, where individuals can now accomplish tasks traditionally reserved for medical professionals from the comfort of their homes. He highlighted the convenience and accessibility of conducting 15–30-point evaluations without the need for a doctor’s visit, revolutionizing the way healthcare is administered.

David explored the emergence of so many ‘AI-powered’ tools, cautioning against what he terms ‘AI-Washing,’ drawing parallels to the previous trend of ‘Smart-Washing.’ He underscored the importance of maintaining genuine innovation amidst the proliferation of AI technologies in product design.

The discussion also explored the exciting future of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) venturing into material innovation for product design. David underscored the important role of designers in meticulously selecting materials for sustainability, composition, durability, and aesthetic appeal. He emphasized the responsibility of designers in striking a delicate balance between beauty and functionality, emphasizing the impact of intrinsic material properties on enhancing user experience. He also touched on the reemergence of using transparent plastics in the consumer electronics at CES that harken back to trends from the 2000’s and the frosted, translucent plastics with soft backlit screens of the iMac G3.

The insightful dialogue from David Byron and Core77 demonstrates Sundberg-Ferar’s dedication to staying at the forefront of design innovation and empowering teams with the tools and techniques of exceptional design. We believe that through collaboration and exploration, we can continue to shape the future of design and create impactful solutions that resonate globally.

Special thanks to John Skabardonis and Covestro for steering the conversation towards exciting developments in both virtual and physical spaces, highlighting the material industry’s commitment to pushing boundaries and fostering innovation.
