1980s to Today: Design for Space Exploration

How are you envisioning the future of humanity beyond the confines of our planet? Hyundai’s X-1A Lunar Rover concept, featuring Ultimate Mobility Vehicle (UMV) technology developed by Sundberg-Ferar and Hyundai’s New Horizons Studio, exemplifies how trailblazers in space exploration technology are partnering with us to take another step into the future.

Sundberg-Ferar’s legacy of innovation in space design goes back to the early planning stages of the International Space Station (ISS). Sundberg-Ferar was contracted to design and build early concepts for the spatial ergonomics of a livability module, which included a gym, bathrooms, a wardroom, and state rooms. These concepts, presented to NASA, focused on thoughtful, ergonomic designs tailored to the unique challenges of space environments.

Sundberg-Ferar has had the privilege of partnering on projects like these because our expertise in human-centered design, spanning mobility, consumer, and industrial applications, is recognized by our partners. This expertise allows us to create environments and products that are both functional and life-enhancing, whether on Earth or in the cosmos.

In our 90th year, as we continue to collaborate with forward-thinking organizations, we invite you to join us in shaping the future of space exploration. Together, we can design the next generation of habitats, vehicles, and tools that will support humanity’s journey into the cosmos. Let’s turn the dream of space exploration into a lived reality, grounded in innovative and human-centered design.
