1960s to Today: Mass Transit Design
At Sundberg-Ferar, we are driven by a vision to revolutionize public transit through superior design and execution. As cities grow and the need for efficient, accessible transportation solutions becomes more urgent, developing innovative transit systems that meet these challenges head-on is an imperative.
Hyundai’s hyperloop high-speed transit vehicle and the original BART vehicle – both designed in partnership with Sundberg-Ferar – are prime examples of how visionary design can transform public transit. The hyperloop promises to redefine high-speed travel, offering unprecedented efficiency and comfort, while the BART system set a new standard for its time for accessibility and user experience in the Bay Area. Both projects were lead by organizations who identified the importance of forward-thinking design in addressing today’s transit needs.
Sundberg-Ferar’s experience in mass transit design spans numerous systems, including the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Each of these illustrate how thoughtful design can enhance the daily commute for millions of people, making public transit a more viable and attractive option.

Innovation in public transit requires a balance of cutting-edge technology and user-centered design. A defining characteristic of our partnerships has been a shared believe that the success of urban mobility lies in creating systems that are not only efficient but also enjoyable to use. This vision has guided our work for 90 years, from our early projects to our latest endeavors in high-speed transit.
As we celebrate our long-standing history of mass transit design, we continue to look forward. The lessons learned from our work with systems like BART, PATH, and The Loop inform our approach to future projects, ensuring that we remain leaders in transit innovation. Our goal is to create transit solutions that set new benchmarks for excellence and meet the evolving needs of urban commuters.
The future of public transit is bright, and we are excited to be a part of shaping it. By focusing on visionary design and superior execution, we aim to create transit systems that improve urban mobility for all. Let’s work together to innovate the future of public transit and make cities more connected, efficient, and enjoyable places to live.
