About The Event

Enough of this doom and gloom about canceled conferences, no air-travel, no large gatherings, WFH notices, shortages of hand sanitizer, face masks, and all the rest of it. So what if you’re holed up in your home-studies and kitchens? We can still aspire to learn, connect, and have fun together. We all need to cheer up a bit, and we, the design community, are the ones known for our optimism! This is our time to shine!

So – Sundberg-Ferar is hosting this free virtual event to connect with and inspire each other on April 29th, 12:00-4:00pm EDT.

Come for insights from live conversations with leaders in all aspects of the creative supply chain. Stay for breaks with live chat, and Q&A with our speakers. Come away with fresh ideas for how you can apply the power of design in your day-to-day work – yes, even from your basement. Who knows – maybe we’ll even do some exercise to keep our muscles from atrophying in this lockdown!

Scroll down to watch recordings of each speaker session!

Agenda

“Industrial Design & YOU!”

Jeevak Badve

Principal + Director of Strategic Growth

Sundberg-Ferar

12:00 pm – 12:15 pm

Jeevak brings energy, passion & curiosity to his role at Sundberg-Ferar. With his unique blend of education and experience in industrial design, engineering and business, he is a rallying voice for the alignment and optimal inclusion of the end user’s un-met needs, and unspoken wants in the core value proposition of a company’s products & service portfolio to generate sought-after shareholder value. Jeevak has more than 23 years of professional design experience, first in India for 7 years at Tata Motors, and then in the U.S. for 16 years at GM Design and now Sundberg-Ferar. Beyond his role at SF, Jeevak is a board member of many prominent design associations and think tanks including the Michigan Design Council, Aether Design Group, and Detroit Creative Corridor. He also served on IDSA’s International board for 6 years and chaired IDSA’s 2017 flagship International Design Conference: “Design IS Business”. In his copious amounts of spare time, Jeevak can be found indulging his love of kickboxing, and obstacle course running, or photographing birds in obscure parts of the world.

“The World of ‘Service Design’”

Owen Foster

12:15 pm – 1:00 pm

Owen’s background in Architecture, landscape, environmental, and industrial design has afforded him the opportunity to work on projects ranging from small consumer products to immersive outdoor experiences around the world. He has held design director positions for product design and manufacturing companies, co-founded Fulcrum Collaborative, and became a regional landscape architect representative for Monrovia Nurseries. Owen followed a calling to be an educator and mentor with professorships in industrial design at Auburn University and the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. Most recently he was a Professor and Department Chair for Industrial Design, Design Management, Service Design, Design for Sustainability, Business of Design, Interaction Design, and Marine Design at the Savannah College of Art and Design. During that time, the SCAD Industrial Design program was ranked in the top 10 by DesignIntelligence each year, earned a Red Dot World Ranking, and continually won awards from international design competitions. As a professor, Owen has facilitated more than 20 collaborative studio projects with Fortune 100 companies and guided international study abroad programs in Ireland, UK, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China. Honored and humbled, he has earned many of the industry’s top awards and honors for both education and design. With a strong passion for being a mentor, I will never worry about my name being remembered–just my deeds.

A special thanks to Kirk Morris for sharing his sketch notes below from Owen’s talk!

My Life Lessons

  • One person, with a good idea, can change the world
  • Health is the real wealth, not gold or silver
  • We are responsible for creating our own happiness
  • It is good for our souls to create with our hands
  • Those who anger us control us
  • Whether you think you can, or can’t – you’re right
  • Giving to others strengthens us
  • The harder we work, the luckier we get
  • Believing in yourself is the best gift you can give yourself
  • Believing in others changes history
  • Today is a precious gift with no promise of tomorrow
  • Seek first to understand, then to be understood
  • The best things in life are free
  • It is difficult to stay upset while on a walk in nature
  • Gratitude multiplies personal happiness
  • Let your faith be bigger than your fears
  • Setbacks are not failures unless you give up
  • Freedom is not free
  • Show you care before showing how much you know
  • Develop life goals, write them down and share them
  • Don’t sweat the small stuff
  • Forgiving others sets us free
  • Miracles happen everyday
  • Stay curious
  • Never ruin an apology with an excuse
  • We are all unique, but equal in the eyes of God
