On this gloriously sunny afternoon in Metro Detroit, Sundberg-Ferar shed every vestige of the cold weather; the team left raincoats at home, and we joyfully embraced our dear old friend, the back patio, for a spring barbecue! In our own beautiful backyard, under a canopy of whispering leaves, we surfaced from our own engrossing design projects and sat on sun-warmed picnic tables, feasting together in the sun.

The team pitched in to make a smorgasbord of food with all the must-have dishes to make a perfect barbecue. If you’re hungry right now, be warned because the next couple sentences will make you drool. Jessie, our bow hunting Office Manager, was MVP of the day and brought her homemade moose burgers, shish kebabs, and the lightest, most melt-in-your-mouth white bread ever. David, our Director of Design, brought juicy homemade coleslaw. Josiah, or Transportation Design Specialist brought the pasta salad. Michelle brought the warm weather classic: Watermelon! The rest of the team rounded out the buffet with chips, homemade salsa, and the condiments. Last, but not least, what would a spring barbecue be without dessert? Sara, our Design Research Manager brought sinful homemade tiramisu and a layered strawberry pretzel delight.

With Cottonwood fluff floating lazily on a gentle breeze, and the smell of charcoal, and blossoming flowers lingering in our noses, we kicked back. Our bellies full, we just let those alpha brain waves roll, or caught up on how each other’s studio projects are coming. We soaked up every bit of the beautiful nature right up to the end.

Returning to tackling our work, we had a spring in our step and renewed inspiration from the fun change of pace, and from each other. Times like these are perfect opportunities for the cross-pollination of ideas between us that is one of our strengths at Sundberg-Ferar. Whether in work or play we’re daily growing, sharing ideas, and challenging each other ultimately to make every product or service we touch a bit better and a bit more beautiful for the benefit of humanity.
